Tiruchirappalli (Trichy) is one of Tamil Nadu's oldest cities, dominated by the Rock Fort — a 273-step climb up an 83-metre granite outcrop with a Vinayaka temple at the summit. Trichy's greatest draw is Srirangam, an island on the Cauvery River home to the Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple, the largest functioning Hindu temple in the world with 21 gopurams spread across 63 hectares. The city was a seat of Chola, Pallava, Nayak, and British power, and the Ucchi Pillayar Temple on the Rock Fort offers sweeping views of the city, river, and temple island below. Trichy is 500km from Cochin.
