Rameshwaram is a sacred island in the Palk Strait, connected to mainland Tamil Nadu by the Pamban Bridge — India's first sea bridge, built in 1914 and stretching 2.3km. The Ramanathaswamy Temple has the longest temple corridor in India at 1,220 metres, with 22 sacred wells (theerthams) whose waters are believed to have distinct healing properties. According to Hindu mythology, Lord Rama built a bridge (Adam's Bridge) from here to Sri Lanka. The Dhanushkodi ghost town at the island's eastern tip, destroyed by a 1964 cyclone, and the Pamban cantilever bridge are unique attractions. Rameshwaram is 630km from Cochin.
