Mahabalipuram (Mamallapuram) is a UNESCO World Heritage Site on the Coromandel Coast, 60km south of Chennai. Built by the Pallava dynasty in the 7th–8th centuries, its rock-cut monuments represent the transition from cave temples to freestanding structural temples in South Indian architecture. The Shore Temple — one of the oldest stone temples in South India — stands at the sea's edge. The Pancha Rathas (five monolithic rock-cut chariots), Arjuna's Penance (a 27m x 9m bas-relief carved on two boulders), and Krishna's Butterball (a 250-tonne balancing rock) are the other highlights.
November to March for cool, dry weather. January for the Mamallapuram Dance Festival (classical dance performed against temple backdrops). Avoid October–December cyclone season. April–June is hot (35–40°C).
Nearest airport: Chennai International (53km, 1.5hr). Nearest railway: Chengalpattu (29km). Well-connected by the coastal East Coast Road from Chennai. Drive from Cochin takes about 10 hours.
