Coonoor is the second largest hill station in the Nilgiris after Ooty, perched at 1,850 metres. Quieter and less commercialized than its neighbour, Coonoor is surrounded by premium tea estates — including the famous Highfield and Sim's Park plantations. The town serves as a stop on the UNESCO Nilgiri Mountain Railway route and offers some of the best trekking trails in the region, including paths to Dolphin's Nose viewpoint (a rock formation jutting 1,550m above the valley), Lamb's Rock, and the hidden Catherine Falls (the tallest waterfall in the Nilgiris at 76 metres). Coonoor is 270km from Cochin.
October to March for clear skies and cool trekking weather (10–20°C). April–June for mild summers. Monsoon (July–September) brings frequent rain and mist — atmospheric but limits visibility.
Nearest airport: Coimbatore (70km, 2.5hr). Nearest railway: Coonoor has its own station on the Nilgiri Mountain Railway (toy train from Mettupalayam, 3.5hr). Drive from Cochin takes about 5 hours via Coimbatore and Mettupalayam.
