Getting from Cochin Airport to Munnar
The journey from Cochin International Airport (COK) to Munnar is one of the most common transfers in Kerala tourism. The distance is approximately 110-130 km depending on the route, and the drive takes 3.5 to 4.5 hours. There is no rail or air connection to Munnar, so road travel is the only option.
This guide covers everything you need to know about the Cochin airport to Munnar distance, the best route to take, current cab costs, and tips for making the journey comfortable.
Route Options: Which Road Should You Take?
Route 1: Via NH85 and Adimali (Most Popular)
- Distance: 130 km
- Travel time: 4-4.5 hours
- Road condition: Well-maintained national highway until Adimali, then ghat road with 45+ hairpin bends
- Highlights: Cheeyappara and Valara Waterfalls, tea plantation views in the final stretch
This is the most scenic and most commonly used route. The first 90 km on NH85 through Perumbavoor and Neriamangalam is straightforward. After Adimali, the road begins its dramatic climb through the Western Ghats. The hairpin bends between Adimali and Munnar are legendary β if you are prone to motion sickness, take medication before this stretch. Despite the bends, the road surface is good and the views are spectacular.
Route 2: Via Kothamangalam and Neriyamangalam
- Distance: 120 km
- Travel time: 3.5-4 hours
- Road condition: Slightly shorter but narrower roads in some sections
- Highlights: Passes through Thattekad Bird Sanctuary area
This alternative route shaves about 10 km off the journey and avoids some of the busier town sections. It merges with Route 1 at Neriamangalam, so the ghat section is the same. Some local drivers prefer this route during peak hours when Perumbavoor town traffic is heavy.
Route 3: Via Muvattupuzha (Longer but Easier Drive)
- Distance: 140 km
- Travel time: 4-4.5 hours
- Road condition: Wider roads for most of the journey, slightly fewer hairpin bends
This is the longest route but has slightly better road width. Some premium cab operators prefer this route because it is marginally easier on larger vehicles like the Toyota Innova. The time difference is negligible.

Can You Take a Bus from Cochin to Munnar?
Yes, KSRTC (Kerala State Road Transport Corporation) operates buses from Ernakulam (Cochin city) to Munnar. However, there is no direct bus from Cochin airport to Munnar. You would need to take a taxi or bus to Ernakulam bus stand first (25 km, 1 hour), then catch the Munnar bus.
- KSRTC bus frequency: 4-5 buses daily from Ernakulam to Munnar
- Travel time: 5-6 hours
- Cost: INR 200-350 per person depending on bus type
- Comfort level: Basic β no AC on most routes, limited legroom
We do not recommend the bus route for tourists, especially those with luggage. The hairpin bends are challenging enough in a private car β they are significantly more uncomfortable in a crowded bus. The time and hassle saved by booking a private cab more than justifies the cost, particularly for families and groups where the per-person cab cost becomes very reasonable.
Tips for the Cochin to Munnar Drive
- Start early: Leave Cochin airport by 7-8 AM if possible. This avoids town traffic and gets you to Munnar by lunchtime, giving you the full afternoon to explore.
- Motion sickness: If you are prone to car sickness, take medication 30 minutes before departure. The hairpin bends between Adimali and Munnar are intense. Sitting in the front seat and keeping your eyes on the road ahead helps.
- Waterfall stops: Ask your driver to stop at Cheeyappara Waterfalls (approximately 2 hours from Cochin) β it is right beside the road and makes for a great photo opportunity and leg stretch.
- Snacks and supplies: Buy water and snacks before the ghat section begins (Adimali has the last proper town with shops). Options thin out significantly on the mountain road.
- Night driving: Avoid driving the ghat section after dark. The hairpin bends are poorly lit, and fog can reduce visibility dramatically. If your flight arrives late, consider staying overnight in Cochin and leaving for Munnar the next morning.
- Monsoon caution: During June-August, the ghat roads can be affected by minor landslides and falling rocks. Travel during daylight and check road conditions with your driver before departing.
