Munnar vs Wayanad: Which Hill Station is Right for You?

By Series Tours Team20 February 20266 min read

Two Hill Stations, Very Different Vibes

Munnar and Wayanad are Kerala's two premier hill stations, yet they offer distinctly different experiences. Munnar is all about rolling tea plantations and dramatic mountain peaks. Wayanad is about dense forests, tribal culture, and wildlife. Choosing between them depends on your travel style, group composition, and what you want from your hill station experience.

Location and Accessibility

Munnar

  • Elevation: 1,600 metres above sea level
  • Distance from Cochin: 130km (4 hours by road)
  • Nearest airport: Cochin International (110km)
  • Road condition: Well-maintained NH but has 45+ hairpin bends in the final stretch from Adimali. Can cause motion sickness for some travellers.

Wayanad

  • Elevation: 700-2,100 metres above sea level (varies by area)
  • Distance from Cochin: 280km (5.5-6 hours by road)
  • Nearest airport: Calicut International (100km, 2.5hr)
  • Road condition: The Thamarassery Ghat road has 9 hairpin bends. Longer overall drive but generally less winding than the Munnar approach.

Weather Comparison

Munnar is consistently cooler due to its higher elevation. Winter nights (December-January) can drop to 5-10°C, while daytime stays around 15-22°C. Wayanad is warmer overall, with winter temperatures around 15-28°C, making it more comfortable if you dislike extreme cold. Both receive heavy monsoon rainfall from June to August — Wayanad slightly more so (average 3,000mm annually vs Munnar's 2,500mm).

Things to Do

Munnar — Best For

  • Tea plantation walks: Endless carpets of tea bushes across the hillsides. Visit Kolukkumalai (world's highest organic tea estate) by jeep safari.
  • Eravikulam National Park: Home to the endangered Nilgiri Tahr. Entry fee: INR 125 per adult. Open October-March (closed February sometimes for lambing season).
  • Top Station: At 1,880m, offers panoramic views into Tamil Nadu. Best visited early morning before clouds roll in.
  • Adventure activities: Paragliding (INR 3,000-4,500), trekking to Anamudi Peak (2,695m, Kerala's highest), mountain biking.
  • Photography: Misty mornings, sunset at Mattupetty Dam, and the Neelakurinji bloom (once every 12 years, last in 2018, next in 2030).

Wayanad — Best For

  • Wildlife: Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary (part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve). Elephant herds, deer, and occasional tiger sightings. Jeep safari: INR 300 per person.
  • Prehistoric caves: Edakkal Caves with Neolithic petroglyphs dating back 6,000 years. A moderate 30-minute uphill walk.
  • Bamboo rafting: At Kuruva Island, a 950-acre river delta with dense tropical forests. Rafting costs INR 200-300 per person.
  • Spice and coffee plantations: Wayanad produces pepper, cardamom, coffee, and vanilla. Plantation stays are popular here.
  • Tribal heritage: Home to several indigenous communities. Visit tribal villages and learn about traditional forest-dwelling cultures.

Best For: Families vs Couples

Families with Children

Winner: Wayanad. The flatter terrain makes it easier for kids. Kuruva Island bamboo rafting is a hit with children. The wildlife sanctuary jeep safaris are exciting but not strenuous. There are more budget-friendly resort options with swimming pools. Edakkal Caves is a gentle trek suitable for kids above 6.

Couples and Honeymooners

Winner: Munnar. The dramatic tea plantation landscapes are more romantic. Mountain-top resorts offer stunning views and privacy. The cooler weather creates a cosy atmosphere. Paragliding tandem flights make for unforgettable shared experiences. More luxury boutique properties are available.

Cost Comparison (Per Couple, 2 Nights)

  • Budget stay: Munnar INR 4,000-6,000 | Wayanad INR 3,500-5,500
  • Mid-range resort: Munnar INR 8,000-14,000 | Wayanad INR 7,000-12,000
  • Luxury property: Munnar INR 18,000-35,000 | Wayanad INR 15,000-28,000
  • Car rental (from Cochin): Munnar INR 4,500-6,000 round trip | Wayanad INR 7,000-9,000 round trip

Our Verdict

If you only have 2 days and are based in Cochin, choose Munnar — it's closer and delivers maximum scenic impact. If you have 3+ days and want a more diverse experience with wildlife, history, and nature combined, choose Wayanad. Ideally, include both in a 7-8 day Kerala itinerary — they complement each other perfectly.
