Poovar is a secluded island destination 30km south of Trivandrum, where the Neyyar River meets the Arabian Sea through a network of mangrove-fringed backwater channels. Accessible only by boat, Poovar's floating resorts and golden sand beach offer a rare combination of river, sea, and lagoon in one location. The area was historically part of the ancient Ay kingdom, and today remains one of Kerala's least crowded coastal destinations. A sandbank separating the river from the sea creates a unique geographical formation.
October to March for sunny weather and calm waters. November–February is peak season with the best conditions for boat cruises. Avoid June–August when monsoon makes boat travel difficult and the sea is rough.
Nearest airport: Trivandrum International (32km, 1hr). Nearest railway: Trivandrum Central (30km). From Cochin, it is 370km (7hr drive). The final stretch to island resorts requires a boat transfer from Poovar jetty.
