About Kumarakom

Kumarakom is an enchanting cluster of small islands spread along the eastern shore of Vembanad Lake, Kerala's largest and most celebrated freshwater lake. The Kumarakom backwaters offer an experience that is at once tranquil and deeply immersive — a world of palm-fringed canals, lotus-covered lagoons, and luxury lakeside resorts where the pace of life is set by the gentle rhythm of the tides. Located approximately 60 km from Kochi and 14 km from Kottayam, Kumarakom has earned its place as one of Kerala's premier tourism destinations, particularly for those seeking a refined, peaceful backwater experience away from the busier Alleppey houseboat routes.

The geography of Kumarakom is defined by its intimate relationship with water. Vembanad Lake, spanning over 2,033 sq km, is one of the largest wetland systems in India and a designated Ramsar site of international ecological importance. Kumarakom sits at the lake's widest point, where the water stretches to the horizon like an inland sea. The landscape is barely above sea level — a mosaic of tiny islands connected by narrow canals, with coconut palms, mangrove thickets, and paddy fields creating layers of green against the silvery water. The climate is tropical and humid, with temperatures ranging from 22°C to 35°C. The best time to visit is November to February, when cool breezes sweep across the lake, skies are clear, and migratory birds arrive in their thousands.

The Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary is the destination's most treasured natural attraction. Spread across 14 acres of lush mangrove forests, marshlands, and tidal flats on the lakeshore, this sanctuary was once the private estate of Alfred George Baker, a British rubber planter. Today it is managed by the Kerala Forest Department and serves as a critical habitat for both resident and migratory birds. From October to February, Siberian storks, egrets, herons, darters, cormorants, teal, and waterfowl arrive from distant lands, transforming the sanctuary into a paradise for birdwatchers and wildlife photographers. Early morning walks along the sanctuary trails — when mist rises from the water and birds fill the mangrove canopy with activity — are an unforgettable experience.

Houseboat cruises on Vembanad Lake are a quintessential Kumarakom experience. Traditional kettuvallam boats, beautifully converted into floating hotels with bedrooms, living areas, and kitchens, cruise through the lake and its connecting canals. Unlike the busier Alleppey backwater routes, Kumarakom houseboats often navigate wider, more serene stretches of Vembanad Lake, offering a sense of spaciousness and solitude. The onboard chef prepares freshly caught karimeen (pearl spot fish), prawns, and other Kerala delicacies as the boat drifts past coconut groves, small fishing hamlets, and the occasional temple or church spire rising above the palms.

Pathiramanal Island, accessible only by boat from Kumarakom, is a serene 10-acre island in the middle of Vembanad Lake. The name translates to Island of the Half Moon, and its walkable nature trails through thick vegetation attract birdwatchers from around the world. The island is home to over 90 species of migratory and local birds and offers a meditative quietness that is hard to find anywhere else in Kerala. A boat ride to Pathiramanal, especially at sunrise or sunset, is one of the most peaceful experiences available on a Kumarakom trip.

Kumarakom is also known for its luxury resort culture. Some of Kerala's finest five-star properties — including the iconic Kumarakom Lake Resort, Coconut Lagoon, and Taj Kumarakom — are set directly on the lakefront, offering Ayurvedic treatments, infinity pools overlooking the water, traditional Kerala architecture with wooden heritage villas, and world-class dining. The village's toddy shop culture is equally authentic — small thatched-roof taverns serve fresh kallu (palm toddy) alongside spicy duck roast, tapioca with fish curry, and other Kerala bar snacks that have been perfected over generations.

Series Tours arranges Kumarakom backwater experiences including houseboat bookings, resort reservations, and birdwatching excursions. We offer packages that combine Kumarakom with Alleppey, Thekkady, or Munnar for a multi-destination Kerala tour. For honeymoon couples, a lakefront villa stay at a luxury Kumarakom resort — with private sunset boat rides, couples' Ayurveda treatments, and candlelit dinners on the lake — is the epitome of romantic Kerala.

Getting to Kumarakom is convenient from multiple directions. The nearest airport is Cochin International (CIAL), approximately 85 km away (about 2 hours by car). The nearest railway station is Kottayam, just 16 km away, with direct trains from Ernakulam, Trivandrum, and other major cities. Series Tours provides comfortable car rental services with pickup from Cochin airport or any Kerala location. The drive from Cochin takes about 1.5 hours via NH66 before turning towards the lake.

The cuisine of Kumarakom is a celebration of fresh water and fertile land. Karimeen pollichathu (pearl spot fish marinated in spices and grilled in banana leaf) is the regional signature dish and a must-try for every visitor. Prawns in coconut milk, crab roast, duck mappas, and appam with fish stew are other staples of the Kumarakom table. The toddy shops and village eateries around the lake serve some of the most authentic, unpretentious Kerala food you will find anywhere.

Whether you seek birdwatching at dawn in the mangrove sanctuary, a lazy houseboat cruise across Vembanad Lake, or a luxurious lakefront resort retreat, Kumarakom delivers a refined and deeply relaxing backwater experience. Contact us to plan your Kumarakom tour with seamless transfers, handpicked stays, and curated experiences.
